Detroit’s First Black-Owned Pizzeria is Sustainably Built with the Help of Michigan Saves

Detroit Pizza Bar has experienced success since opening its doors in April 2022 in Detroit’s Livernois-McNichols neighborhood, but it wasn’t an easy road to its opening. After losing funding during the pandemic, Michigan Saves joined the project to help finance sustainable equipment and features, including 11 solar panels and custom water and light fixtures throughout the restaurant. According to co-owner Akunna Olumba, the restaurant would not be open without the help of Michigan Saves, the nation’s first nonprofit green bank.
