How to Maximize Your Water Heater Efficiency in Winter

Because water heaters account for about 18 percent of your home’s energy use—and given that we use more hot water in cold weather—it’s well worth taking steps to improve the efficiency of your unit this winter.

How to Winterize a Water Heater

Winterizing can protect your pipes and water heater, especially in colder winter climates. You can do this by:

1. Scheduling for your water heater to be serviced in fall or early winter to ensure that its components and sensors are in good working order.

2. Draining your water heater (without turning off the water) and removing any sediment.

3. Insulating your water heater and pipes. This reduces heat loss and keeps the water hotter for longer periods, reducing the energy required to maintain the water temperature. Insulating can save you 4–9 percent in water heating costs and prevent your heater and pipes from freezing.

Other Ways to Improve Efficiency

You can also maximize your water heater’s efficiency—and energy savings—by doing the following:

1. Lower the water heating temperature. The US Department of Energy recommends setting your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is adequate for most uses and can significantly reduce energy consumption compared to higher settings. Lowering the temperature can save 4–22 percent annually on your water heating bills.

2. Purchase an ENERGY STAR® certified water heater. If your unit is nearing the end of its lifespan (usually after about ten years), replacing it with an energy efficient water heater in the form of an ENERGY STAR® certified model can be a wise investment. These heaters offer significantly more energy and cost savings than standard heaters (approximately $3,500 over the unit’s lifetime).
