Additionally, Michigan Saves requires all contractors with Residential Builders or a Residential Maintenance & Alterations License to provide documentation of lead-safe training. As of April 22, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that contractors performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination if the structure was built before 1978. Firms can become certified by completing an application and sending in a fee payment. Applications may take up to 90 days to be approved by the EPA. Individual renovation contractors must complete an EPA-accredited training course in order to receive certification. More information is available at www.epa.gov.

Classification number two (HVAC equipment) is for installation work only and is not a substitute for the service classifications per the State of Michigan. Michigan Saves requires that authorized contractors provide at least one year warranty on labor. If service is required within the first year under the warranty agreement, the authorized contractor is responsible for either obtaining the service classification(s) or hiring a subcontractor that holds the service classification(s).
